JV Game Summaries
GAME 5: CENTRAL 6, A.L. Brown 5
The Central JV team avenged their loss on Tuesday by rallying to beat Brown at home, scoring a run in the bottom of the 7th to squeak out a 6-5 win.
Central started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st. Garrett Freeze doubled to lead off the game and scored off the bat of Jackson Pridgen.
In the 3rd, Central added to their total. Freeze doubled again and got to 3rd on a throwing error. Mason Corzine drove in the run when Freeze scored on his ground out to 2B to make the score 2-0.
In the top of the 6th, Brown tied the score at 2....but Central scored 3 of their own in the bottom of the inning. Jordon Bruce ripped a 1-out single to get things started. With 2 outs, Austin Biddy singled to put runners on 1st & 2nd. A.J. Furr then came through in the clutch with an RBI single that scored Bruce and made the score 3-2. Freeze then came to the bat and delivered again, driving a double to the gap to score Biddy and Furr and run the lead to 5-2 heading to the last inning.
Brown didn't quit, scoring 3 runs to tied the game and force Central to bat in the home half of the 7th.....but that just set up a dramatic finish at The Cove.
In the 7th, Quinton Covington led off with a single. After a force out and an intentional walk to Colby Pressley, Jordon Bruce stepped to the plate with runners on 1st & 2nd. With a 1-1 count, Bruce delivered, driving a shot to left that scored Jackson Pridgen with the walk-off winning run.
Garrett Freeze was the hero on the night, with 3 doubles at the plate and a great night on the hill. Freeze pitched 5 innings and gave up only 2 ER while striking out a career-high 11 Wonders hitters. Quinton Covington pitched the final 2 innings and struck out 2 while giving up 3 ER.
The Vikings host Concord on Tuesday.
GAME 3: CENTRAL 6, Hickory Ridge 5
The JV Vikings traveled to Hickory Ridge and got revenge and a win against their cross-town rivals, winning by the score of 6-5. Central lost the league opener 9-1 last week, but rallied to play their best game to date in this one.
Quinton Covington got things started for the Vikings in the 1st inning with a triple. Jackson Pridgen drove Covington home with the single and the Vikings were up 1-0.
In the 3rd, Garrett Freeze led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. After a lineout to center, Central strung together 4 hits in the row. Covington & Pridgen each singled to load the bases, then Colby Pressley roped a shot to left-center for a double that scored 2. Jordon Bruce followed Pressley's hit with a single to score another Central run and helped the Vikings lead 4-1 after 3 innings of play.
In the 4th, Dan Roman singled and moved to 2nd on a SAC bunt by AJ Furr. Freeze walked to put men on 1st & 2nd, then Covington ripped his 3rd hit of the night to left to score Freeze. Pridgen matched Covington with his 3rd hit later in the inning to score Mason Corzine, who reached on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the 4th, Covington made a great running catch in left-center and threw to 2nd to double up the runner for an inning-ending defensive masterpiece.
Hickory Ridge fought back to make the score 6-5, but defensive gems by Bruce & Covington saved the game. Freeze came on in the 7th and shut the door on the Bulls, getting the final 2 hitters to pop out to secure the win and earn his 2nd save of the season.
Jordon Bruce pitched 5 great innings and surrendered only 3 runs to earn the victory.
Congrats to the Vikings (1-2, 1-1 in the SPC) on their 1st win of the season. The team travels to Kannapolis to play A.L. Brown tonight at 4:30 pm.
GAME 2: Hickory Ridge 9, CENTRAL 1
Central opened the conference season against the rival Bulls, but came out on the short end of a 9-1 score.
Freshman Garrett Freeze was a bright spot on the hill, throwing 3 innings of scoreless relief while striking out 5. Freeze also tripled in the game.
The lone Central run came in the bottom of the 7th, when Colby Pressley tripled and eventually scored on a single by Jordon Bruce.
The Vikings (0-2) travel to Sun Valley to play the Spartans on Wednesday.
GAME 1: Sun Valley 9, CENTRAL 6
The JV Vikings lost a tough one in the opener on Friday against Sun Valley, falling to the Spartans by the score of 9-6.
Jordan Bruce, Jackson Pridgen, Colby Pressley & Garrett Freeze all showed good signs on the hill, while Pressley, A.J. Furr, Freeze & Quinton Covington led the offense.
